Pet Oil Paintings

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. How fortunate for the artist to be able to capture that beauty in a painting that can be shared with others. When painting animals I do my best to capture their inner qualities of sweetness, affection, and devotion to their owners, or rather their family. Since the eyes are the gateway to the soul, I focus tremendous energy on painting life into their eyes, so that when looking at the finished work, we feel to know them with our hearts, and perhaps experience what they are feeling.

Portraits of People

Trandafir commonly works from photographs either taken by him or provided by the client. The finished painting tells a story, whether it is a pet a person or a cityscape. The goal is to bring a shared vision to life to achieve the final quality in the finished work; Trandafir paints on linen rather than cotton canvas. Linen not only outlasts cotton but also stretches tighter and stronger, and offers a more resilient surface to the brush.

Meet the artist…

Roland Pierre Trandafir has been painting professionally for half a century. His portraits are proudly exhibited in private collections throughout the world.

For the artist, capturing consciousness in people and animals in his paintings is the most challenging and most rewarding aspect of his work, especially when the client sheds a tear when first seeing the work.

The painter was born in Paris in the Montmartre part of the city. Early childhood was in Beaumont Sur Oise, just northwest of Paris where he played in the very poppy fields made famous by the early impressionists.

While still an infant, mother, father and baby sister immigrated to New York City, and eventually settled in New Jersey.

At the age of six, Roland began his painting studies at the side of his father’s easel. As he matured, he was quick to understand the techniques necessary to render flesh tones with luminosity and vibrancy, in order to create power and life.

The artist graduated from Rutgers University with a BFA in fine arts, and a B.Sc. in biology with a minor in chemistry. He then enrolled in the MFA program at Rutgers Mason Gross School of Fine Arts.

Under the encouragement and guidance of his teacher and mentor Leon Golub, for whom he also served as teaching assistant, Roland perfected his style of realism.

Testimonials

“Roland Trandafir has a particular gift for connecting with people. His many portrait commissions bare testimony to the rapport he establishes with his clients and his willingness to address all of their concerns. Trandafir works easily in portraiture – an area that traditionally is fraught with difficulties. He is thorough in his attention to detail and consistently captures the essence of the sitter. It has been rewarding on all levels to work with a true professional”.

Sam Davidson, Davidson Galleries, Seattle

“I provided the funds to construct the James B. Douglas Forum at the University of Washington School of Business. The plans called for a portrait. Several art dealers were contacted. One of the many artists interviewed was Roland Trandafir. Impressed with his enthusiasm, I was convinced that he would give the project the full extent of his ability – I was right. Those considering Mr. Trandafir for a portrait commission should see this outstanding work. I put my faith in an artist with great ability. My faith was justified.”

-James B. Douglas

I saw Trandafir’s painting and it became an integral part of my collection. I encouraged Roland to pursue his art because I knew this man was born to be a great artist. As I saw his career develop, that thought became a certainty in my mind.”

-Dr. Robert C. Atkins MD. , Cardiologist-Author/

Atkins Center for Alternative Therapies, N.Y.

“In the world of art, I’ve always found myself attracted to portraits. Roland’s portrait of myself exceeded my wildest expectations.”

-Yasser Seirawan,

IGM chess champion

I have been collecting Trandafir’s paintings since 1994. His ability to bring a canvas to life is most incredible. Roland has an amazing talent for capturing a moment in time, in all its detail. Each new piece is a treasure for the soul”.
